UCO 2009 MONTANA HUNTING REPORT: We started the 2009 hunting season in September enjoying a
successful archery season. The elk didn't bugle as much this year and we found them to be fairly quite for most of the season. This added a new challenge and we needed to change some of the ways we hunted during the rut. Coming up with new ideas and trying different types of stalks we did end up harvesting three nice bulls and our hunters all got into elk. Rifle season started out with a bang. The first week we had snow which was wonderful and of our seven guided hunters five harvested elk. The highlight of the second week was a large 6x7 bull. The third week it was fairly warm but we did end up harvesting a few elk and a couple of nice mule deer as they started to go into rut this third week. The fourth week started out with fresh snow and perfect conditions for hunting but, then the wind started and didn't quit for three days this made hunting very complicated this week. They ended up harvesting two elk and missed three other elk so for the conditions our hunters did better than expected. We finished the season off with very warm weather some days where in the 50's so it made hunting difficult. We did end up with a number of large mule deer and very nice whitetail and a cow elk for the last week. As we sat at the table last night and reflected back on the 2009 hunting season we felt that we still have a large population of elk in the valley, but they were able to hold up in the timber for most of the season. There was lots of grass in the timber this year and not much snow which made for perfect conditions for the elk - shelter, food and water all in one spot no need to move around. These conditions did make for a hard season. The snow is one of the largest helpers in getting our hunters elk. As we sum up the season out of 26 guided elk hunters 12 harvested, 6 missed elk or passed on opportunities for 45% harvest and 70% opportunities, on mule deer we had 3 guided hunters 2 harvested on one missed a nice buck for 66% harvest and 100% opportnity and on whitetail we had six hunters and five harvested one one missed a buck for a total of 90% harvest and 100% opportunity. As you look at these figures even with the difficult hunting conditions our hunters did very well.
UCO HUNTS
We offer a variety in hunting experiences. Our family has been exploring, hunting, and fishing in these beautiful mountains since our grandfather homesteaded here in 1910 the Tate family has been in the outfitting business since 1978. We are a professional licensed outfitter with the state of Montana. We offer a number of different types of hunts we hunt both private and public land. Because of the vast area we hunt in we can offer both guided and unguided hunts. Upper Canyon Outfitters sits between three major Rocky Mountain Ranges, the Snowcrest Range on the south, the Greenhorns on the north, and the Gravelly’s to the east. All within ten minutes from our ranch. We have two camps for our guided hunters and our unguided hunter stay at our base ranch. Within this hunting district the Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks only allows the taking of brow tine bulls. This rule has helped create an elk herd of substantial size in our area. This has enabled us to have a high success rate for five and six point bulls. During archery season and during the rifle season your elk tag is good for a bull or a cow elk. This is hunting in districts #330 and #324. Upper Canyon Outfitters is dedicated to providing a first-class, successful trip for each of out guest. We would like to share our commitment for quality and excellence with you by providing a truly unforgettable Montana hunting experience.
Additional information: We do about 30 - 40% success, this is animals harvested. About 70% of our hunters have opportunity and seldom does a hunter not get into elk during their hunt with us. We believe that weather plays the biggest part on the success of the hunt. To improve your success being in good physical condition and practicing with your rifle will have a large impact on your hunt. There are large numbers of elk and deer in our area and the hunters that do the best work at it long before they get to Montana.
