Special Weekend:  The first week in August the ranch came alive with “Pink “   as we sponsored a Casting for Recovery retreat.    All of us at Upper Canyon Outfitters (UCO) were privileged to experience the weekend with such a powerful group of ladies.    The CfR retreat lodging and meal costs for a group of twenty-four women was sponsored by the Mt. Outfitters and Guides Association,  through the “Big Hearts under the Big Sky” program.    The group kept busy learning the fundamentals of fly casting, entomology, knot-tying and equipment basics, but most importantly, they spent time on the water practicing catch-and-release fishing.  Casting for Recovery, founded in 1996, is a national non-profit support and educational program for breast cancer survivors.  The retreat is tailored to promote and support mental and physical healing through shared experiences and the learning of new skills.  To learn more about our fantastic weekend go to

ARTICLE OUT ABOUT UCO:  The Trail Rider Magazine has a good article about Virginia City and our ranch in this months issue.  http://www.myhorse.com/magazines/trail_rider.aspx  Than go to "Old West Adventure"

HORSES, HORSES AND MORE HORSES: We had some splendid horseback rides last summer.  We added a few more horses and mules to the herd and had one baby mule born on the ranch this summer - it is growing into a very large mule good thing he has a very quite disposition.  We offer a variety of horse activities - whether a novice rider or horse enthusiast, the ranch accommodates all guest with a ride to suit your skill level.  Two-hour to full-day rides, overnight rides, cattle drives and quest week all these are fantastic horse adventures.

Quest Week was outstanding in 2009 and have even more plans for the 2010 Quest Week.  Last year the ladies had lots of fun learning animal communication, new horse skills, lots of riding along with enjoying some remarkable hikes, fly fishing and learning how to relax, and look at life in a new light and listen to the positive voices inside you. The ladies took home with them life lessons that will guide them every day during their life's.  Check out the 2010 Quest Week Plans at http://www.ucomontana.com/womens_week/

I hope you can join us in Montana - hunt, fish, hike, go horseback riding; just sit back and enjoy the beauty of Southwest Montana! May your choices of activities be with us at UCO and we help you make memories that you look back on and cherish forever. That is our job; to make your dreams come true.

We look forward to visiting with you on our front porch.

Tight Lines and Keep riding it out - stay in the saddle. Jake and Donna McDonald

Hope you can join us for a warm fire in Montana

I just wanted to let all of the ladies know what an exciting time they will have, if they decide to accompany their husband on his hunting or fishing trip. Jake and Donna McDonald are the most gracious of hosts. You will definitely feel comfortable at Upper Canyon. If you like to hike, you will be in the right place. If you like antiques or shopping, there are really interesting shops in the area. If you are a history buff, the area is so very rich in history. If you are up for a day-long adventure, Yellowstone National Park is magnificent beyond description. If you are looking forward to a quiet vacation with wonderful scenery, excellent food and accomodations, just bring a good book and get ready to relax. Aside from all of those wonderful things, one of the things that I appreciate the most, is that Jake and Donna are Montana natives. I feel that fact gives them the ability to provide a "real" Montana vacation experience to their guests. They love the land and it shows. Donna invited me to watch her in the beginning stages of training a horse. That was certainly a unique experience for me. One of my most favorite experiences at Upper Canyon, is listening to Donna's Father relate Montana experiences from when Donna's Grandfather settled the Ranch. Donna's Mother is a very special lady and I know that you will enjoy meeting her. Ladies, if you go to Upper Canyon, I'm convinced that you will have a delightful time.

Wow! This is really a nice review.
This seems to have a great time in Montana in which it looks like a place to visit.

As I sit at my desk in my cube here in western PA, I long to be on the streams catching trout with UCO! I spent one day fly fishing there and am hooked on the place. Now to spend the winter convincing my buddies that this is THE place to go next season! Keep up the great work and I look forward to another visit. And next time I'll stay longer and bring friends.

UCO is simply the best! Jake and Donna are amazing people who make all of their guests and staff feel like they're part of a family. There are so many things to do around the ranch area. It's just a good time to sit there and look out the window, but there is a lot more to do than that! You can fish, hunt, shop, hike....just about anything; Donna is really good at helping you figure out what would suit you. I was there for a summer and miss the ranch and the staff terribly. If you're interested in going, don't hesitate!

Through tearful eyes, I left UCO Monday. Having been there now for cattle drive 5 years in addition to visits outside of cattle drive and once during hunting season, The unique pleasure for me this year was sharing the trip with not only my daughter but my grand daughter and a family friend as well. Seeing it all thought new eyes. I love not only the area and all it offers but the people as well.Donna and Jake are gracious and full of western hospitality. This year's visit allowed not only an opportunity to make some new friends but reconnect with some old friends as well. I cherish these trips, holding them tight the year long. They sustain me.I am grateful for Donna and Jake and their dutiful staff. I always feel well cared for. God willing I will return.
