Wildlife Viewing
Upper Canyon Outfitters is located in the Ruby Valley 24 miles from the town of Alder. Being only 60 miles directly west of Yellowstone National Park we are also included in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. We are surrounded by the Beaverhead National Forest which consist of approximately 2 million acres. We have a wide variety of wildlife in our area. Driving to the ranch you will enjoy viewing whitetail, mule deer, antelope and many different species of birds. Following is a list of different animals you will enjoy while you are spending time in the mountains of Montana.
Wildlife you will see quite often from the front deck of the lodge: Mule Deer, Whitetail Deer, Big Horn Sheep and Antelope.
Wildlife you will often see on our horseback rides or auto tours: Elk, Black Bear, Moose, Coyote, Mountain Goat and Red Fox.
Wildlife that live in the area – But you rarely ever see: Gray Wolf, Grizzly Bear, Mountain Lion, Lynx, Bobcat, and Wolverine.
The species of fish that live in our waters are: Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Artic Grayling, Westslope and Yellowstone Stone Cutthroat Trout, Mountain Whitefish, and Brook Trout (Char).
This area is famous for bird watching and we see many different types of Hawks and Eagles almost daily. Some other birds are: Loons, Herons, Many types of waterfowl, Falcons, Sandhill Cranes, Doves, Owls, Kingfishers, Woodpeckers, Magpies, Jays, Swallows, Sparrows, Finches and Chickadess are just to name a few.
Along with watching all the wildlife you don’t forget to take time to view the array of colors from all the wildflowers native to our area: Blazing Star, Forget-Me-Not, Lupine, Bluebells, Iris, Paintbrush, Fireweed, Shooting Stars and many more.
